AI bookkeeper for UK sole traders. Receipts photographed → categorised. Bank feed → reconciled. Quarterly MTD submissions → automated. From £9/mo.
Every UK sole trader earning over £50k must keep digital records and file quarterly. Threshold drops to £30k in April 2027 (+1.2m traders), and £20k in April 2028 (+2m more). 4.3m sole traders will be in scope by then. sole.tax handles MTD on autopilot — quarterly submissions, year-end self-assessment, the lot.
Photo your receipt. Get a clean tax return. Everything else is invisible.
WhatsApp a receipt, snap it in-app, or forward an email. AI extracts amount, supplier, VAT, category. Human QA reviews ambiguous ones.
Open Banking connection auto-imports transactions. Categorisation engine matches against past patterns + your industry SIC.
Every 3 months we file your quarterly update to HMRC. You get a one-paragraph summary in plain English. Approve with one tap.
End of tax year, your SA100 is pre-filled. Human year-end review on Pro+ tiers. You sign. We file. HMRC done.
Average customer is processing their first receipt within 6 minutes of sign-up.
One question: what do you do for work? (Plumber? Personal trainer? Etsy seller? Each gets a tax-rule profile customised to its SIC code and likely expense categories.)
Open Banking link (1 minute). HMRC MTD authorisation (2 minutes — we walk you through it). You're set up.
WhatsApp them as you go. Or batch-send weekly. Our AI categorises. Human QA stamps anything ambiguous. You get a monthly "all caught up" message.
Pay-as-you-grow. Switch tiers any time. Annual saves 20%.
Not strictly — yet. MTD threshold drops to £30k in April 2027 and £20k in April 2028. If you're between £20k-£50k revenue, you have 1-2 years before MTD is mandatory for you. Starting now means you're ready and the bookkeeping habit is built. Basic tier (£9/mo) is designed for this group.
No, and we make this clear. We are an AI-bookkeeping software platform. Your data is processed using HMRC-recognised MTD APIs. Year-end self-assessment review (Pro+ tiers) is performed by qualified bookkeepers on our QA team. Complex tax-planning questions are out of scope and we'll refer you to a chartered accountant where needed.
Sole.tax handles income tax MTD. If you're also VAT-registered, you need MTD for VAT — that's a separate service. We're building VAT.tax (our sister vertical) for that. For now, customers who need both run MTD VAT through their current tool (e.g. FreeAgent, Xero) and use sole.tax for income tax. They cross-link.
Yes. UK-residency data only (Supabase EU/UK regions). Encrypted at rest. Retained for the HMRC-required 5 years then auto-deleted unless you opt to extend. You can export everything as CSV/PDF at any time. We don't share your data with third parties beyond HMRC MTD APIs.
Pro and Plus tiers include HMRC enquiry cover (£500 on Pro, £2,500 on Plus). If HMRC opens an enquiry, our QA team prepares your response and represents your books to HMRC up to the cover limit. Most enquiries resolve at the documentation stage — having clean, AI-categorised records makes this a 1-day process not a 6-week one.
Yes. Pro+ tiers include 12 months of backlog onboarding. Send us the shoebox (literally — we have a UK forwarding address for paper, or scan and upload). Our QA team digitises and categorises within 14 days. We file any missed quarterly submissions with late-filing penalty mitigation where possible.
Xero is built for accountants with clients. Sole.tax is built for sole traders directly. You don't pay for collaboration features, multi-user access, fixed-asset registers, or any of the accountant-grade controls. You pay for receipts → categorised → MTD filed. That's it. The AI does work that previously cost £40+/hour from a bookkeeper.
No card. 4 minutes to set up. First quarterly MTD return filed within 3 months.
